There is a large number of people who suffer from migraines, anxiety or depression today. While many turn to over-the-counter or prescription drugs to cope with their condition, others swear by something more natural – the healing power of yoga.
The hand and finger gestures that are often used during meditation or breathing exercises are known as mudras.
Although these gestures are conducted by using only the hands, it’s believed that mudras help direct the flow of energy to the body.
This can stimulate different areas of the brain, working to calm the mind and relieve stress. So, if you suffer from migraines, anxiety or depression, practicing these mudras may help soothe you.
1. Prithvi Mudra – The Mudra of Earth
This mudra is used to combat stress and exhaustion. What is more, it aids the digestive system while improving blood circulation and calming the mind. To perform this mudra, touch the tip of your ring finger to the tip of your thumb. Press these two fingers together while extending your other three fingers.
2. Vayu Mudra – The Mudra of Air
The mudra of air is best used to release excess air in the stomach. If you suffer from a condition such as arthritis or Parkinson’s disease, this mudra may be able to help. To perform this mudra, fold your index finger and place the base of your thumb against the bone closest to the tip of the finger. Your thumb should be slightly higher than your index finger. Apply pressure while stretching your other three fingers.
3. Varun Mudra – The Mudra of Water
This mudra regulates fluids in the body, moisturizing the skin for a healthy glow. It can be helpful in soothing itching and dry skin. To perform this mudra, touch the tips of your thumb and pinky finger together lightly. Keep your other three fingers extended.
4. Gyan Mudra – The Mudra of Knowledge
The mudra of knowledge is used to improve memory and concentration. This mudra is also believed to be a natural remedy for insomnia, as it stimulates the pituitary and endocrine glands. To perform this mudra, touch the tip of your thumb against the tip of your index finger. Your other three fingers should be extended. They can be slightly bent if that is more comfortable.
5. Agni Mudra – The Mudra of Fire
This mudra is used to stimulate the thyroid gland. It may be particularly beneficial if you suffer from anxiety, weight problems or digestion problems. To perform this mudra, bend your ring finger and press the base of your thumb against it. Leave your other three fingers extended.
6. Prana Mudra – The Mudra of Life
This mudra is used to balance the body’s energy. It may help improve problems with eyesight and insomnia. To perform this mudra, touch the tip of your thumb to the tips of your pinky finger and ring finger. Keep your other two fingers extended and straight.
7. Apanu Vaya Mudra – The Mudra of the Heart
The Apanu Vaya Mudra strengthens the heart. This mudra should be performed daily, especially for those who have experienced a heart attack. To perform this mudra, touch the tips of your middle and ring fingers to the tip of your thumb. Stretch out your pinky finger and allow your index finger to touch the base of your thumb. Apply light pressure.
8. Shunya Mudra – The Mudra of Emptiness
This mudra can help if you suffer from earaches or migraines. To perform this mudra, bend your middle finger and place your thumb over it. Press the bone closest to the tip of your finger, using the base of your thumb. Keep the rest of your fingers as straight as possible.
